Building Interactive Digital Learning

"I've been making instructor-led and online learning courses for 25 years," Gretchen told me when I spoke with her at her makeshift home office. When she's not at home with her dog, Risa, she's on campus in New Haven working away. She started at Bloomsburg for her Master of Science in Instructional Technology, .

then went to work for a consulting firm. Combining education and technology was something she's been 475869\passionate about since the beginning.

"I've know that this is what I wanted to do since the beginning," she said mapping out her career journey in the air turning in her swivel chair, "I've gone from interesting project to interesting project, so there was never really a point where I would have question my decision."

Depending on the project the role that she would play varies, but a throughline throughout each project is designing the courses used to educate professionals. On most of the projects she would be the only instructional designer, like her current project with Yale.

"Could you tell me about the project your currently working on"

"I'm working on a project that places managerial and other nonunion positions into 'job families'", she explained using air quotes. "The job families are to be used as a reference to compare positions outside of the university system"

"Why hasn't something like this existed before"

As if she already knew what I was going to say she explained, "Initiatives like that need to be budgeted in advance. They actually tried to get the initiative started before COVID, so it's been a few years in the making.

As she went through her work for the day, which consisted of video editing, she explain between repeated video clips, making sure that the audio was correct, about a time where she say immediate change from her work.

"I was working on a course for Geisinger on antimicrobial stewardship, using specific antibiotics instead of more generalized ones." she elaborated. "I was consulting with a doctor in Washington and he changed a prescription he was going to give because of the initiative"
